My Grandfather has been living by himself for quite a while.
He has some health complications and our Grandma used to help him around the house with a few things, but since her passing, we have to check on him a lot.
We also send over a health aide a few times a month to monitor his health. One cold evening his gas furnace stopped working while he was at his house alone. The Heating, Ventilation, and A/C system was downstairs in the basement, so he put on his slippers and went downstairs to see what the problem was. He called a neighbor who walked him through the steps to reset the heater, and once he finished the small repair, he was getting ready to head back upstairs. He was going to reset his temperature control when he slipped on a step and fell. He was able to call for help, but it was freezing in the basement since the gas furnace had not been on for long. His body began aggressively shivering when he remembered that he could reset the temperature control from his cellphone. I’m glad my mom had recommended installing a SMART temperature control in his condo so that he didn’t have to travel far to adjust the temperature. So he was able to reset the temperature control and by the time help showed up, he had warmed up. He was still cold, but the paramedic said that if he had stayed in the freezing cold for another 15 minutes, he may have started to experience some side effects!
