I’ve worked at the front desk of a retirement house for a long time.
I like working here. I’m learning a lot about the residents. And I know that the stereotypes about elderly people simply aren’t true. It truly can be quite hurtful sometimes! However, there are a few things I’ve found out about it… I found out that the residents are consistently complaining about the A/C and the furnace. They are absolutely worried about the temperature of the retirement house because they consistently don’t prefer it to be too cold or too hot. They have an increased likelihood of developing arthritis, and so they need regular temperatures to maintain homeostasis. A friend told me about programmable thermostats and so I mentioned it to my manager! Since the residents follow the same patterns throughout the afternoon. It’s worth having a thermostat that we can automatically program to change temperatures at certain times during the day. They generally like it to be a little bit warmer at night, in addition to periodically adjusting the thermostat with all of the other closing duties I usually have. Then we decided to give it a try. The new thermostat has been a sizable hit! The residents raved over how nice it looks! Most of them had dial thermostats in their old homes. It is funny to see how they all come together to look at it. They’re amazed by the smallest things. It’s a good reminder to me to express gratitude.
